lawrence
sitting in lawrence, sister elaine and stuart's place, eating, waiting and getting anxious.
the weather looks auspecious. the gods have certainly put enough obstacles in my way the last 3 years. now, i'm staring at some pretty shitty weather to start out. rain forecast for monday through friday. then, i guess, it gets better. so i'm going to leave here a day earlier than i thought. tomorrow, sunday, will be sunny, but with 13-15 mph winds. high of 60, then it will go down to 36 at night, about near my limit that i'm prepared for. might keep my socks on in bed.
on monday the rain moves in and the high stays in the 50's. same on tuesday. wednesday it's thunderstorms, but the temps go up to the 70's. i'm hoping i'll miss some of that if i can get west enough. i sent out a couple of feelers to warmshower host in great bend, first major milepost along the route, 4-5 days ride from here. not counting on anything, but you never know. there are a couple of hotels out there if i get desperate.
i'm planning on riding the flint hills bike trail for a couple of days, but the rain may screw that up. it's a compacted gravel surface. for the first 3 nights i have recreational campgrounds spaced about 55 miles apart. thinking i'll be able to find a pavilion at them to shelter under, but anticipate a few cold, wet days.
i will start out slow tomorrow, no need to rush, so a good breakfast, tea, and off.
Good luck, man. Ride safe and try to stay warm & dry.
